The Schrempp’s Bi-Yearly Holiday Letter /

Walk Update #1 - December 2001

Happy Holidays!!!  We are going to start this letter out as a Holiday Update and then transition into the Walk Update.  Bob has had a job change in the past year.  After working for the Information Technology Services (ITS) division for 17 years, Bob moved to the Administration and Financial Division (AFD) with AFD Network and Technology Services Department (ANTS).  Bob’s job duties include computer and technology support for the Division.  He loves working with all the different departments including HR, Payroll, University Police, etc…  When Bob worked in ITS, his area of support was the entire campus, now he only has to support the departments within his division.  He loves this part of his job, because he really gets to know the people in the division.

Before Bob met Katie, he was involved with model railroading.  Recently, he went to a modular railroad show and realized how much he missed this hobby.  So model railroading is back in his life.  He has already planned his first module and can’t wait to build it, so he can participate in future shows.

Katie is doing great.  She has started her third year in Financial Aid.  Katie has recently become the co-chair for the Outreach Program to help promote Financial Aid. Presenters are making presentations at high schools in the area and Cal Poly for present and future students.  This new project keeps Katie very busy, and she just loves it.

We are still very involved with Amateur Radio and Emergency Communications.  We were involved in the San Antonio Wildflower Triathlon, a 50-mile horse endurance race, a soccer tournament and weekly check-ins.  We also edited the newsletter for the SLOECC (San Luis Obispo Emergency Communications Council) during the past two years.  We are always practicing for emergencies in the SLO area.

Now onto the Walk Update #1.  As you know, Katie will be walking in the San Francisco Avon Breast Cancer Walk in July 2002.  She will be walking 60 miles in three days.  Because of this Katie and Bob have been walking tons of miles.  As of December 2nd, we have walked 267 miles.  By the time of the walk, we will have walked about 1,100 miles.  So far Katie has gone through one pair of shoes, and we have both found out the importance of good shoes (no more sore feet).  Katie’s Mom, Barbara, has signed up to “Crew” the Walk.  She will be working one of the grab 'n go's on the route during the day while Katie is walking.  Bob will be cheering Katie on during the walk at the "Cheer" Sections on the route.  As the walk gets closer, I will let you know were you can go to cheer on the walkers during the event.

In order to participate in the Walk, Katie had to raise a minimum of $1900, but her goal is to raise a minimum of $5000.  As of this letter, she has raised $3125.  Thank you to everyone who has made a donation in support of Katie and the fight against breast cancer.  Some facts about Breast Cancer: 1 out of every 9 women in America will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, the five-year survival rate for patients treated for early-stage breast cancer is 96%, and men can develop breast cancer.  Grants are awarded by the Avon Products Foundation with guidance from the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade Advisory Board.  The mission of the Crusade is to improve access to quality breast care for medically underserved women, and to advance breast cancer research in the US.  In 1999, the EOC Health Services Center of SLO received a grant.  If you have any questions, please call or e-mail either one of us.
